Mike Penning MP abstained from an important motion in the House of Commons on Monday (21/06/21) which called on the government to “protect the right of communities to object to individual planning applications.”
Labour held a vote on Government plans which have been described as by Steve Reed MP, Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary as a “developers’ charter that silences local communities so that developers can exploit local communities for profit”.
The proposals will restrict residents to engaging on planning applications as part of Dacorum Council’s local plan instead of individual developments as is currently the case. The move came as it emerged that over £800,000 donations had been made to the Tories by property developers in the first quarter of 2021 alone.
“Once again Mike Penning has failed to stand up for the interest of residents and sided with the property developers”, said Mandi Tattershall, Chair of Hemel Hempstead Labour Party.
“Over 1.1m planning applications have been approved but not built since 2010. These plots are lying empty while the Government wants to put rocket boosters under new applications without community input.
“Labour will get these shovel ready houses built and plan carefully through joint working with local councils to deliver affordable housing with proper facilities and space.”
