Theresa May has announced a £20 billion birthday present for the NHS without being able to say where the money is coming from. But this shouldn’t be a present – this represents money that the Conservatives have systematically stripped out the NHS throughout the austerity years.
When the Conservatives came to power in 2010 they said the NHS was safe in their hands and said in their manifesto there would be no re-organisation. The ensuing Health and Social Care Act 2012 led to the largest top down re-organisation in the NHS’s history and we’re still reeling from the aftershock.
The Herts Valley Clinical Commissioning Group which was created by the Act is outsourcing patient services to private companies while the West Herts NHS Trust is steadfastly refusing to listen to residents who want new green field hospital servicing West Herts rather than being forced to travel to grid locked St Albans or Watford to be seen.
Mike Penning MP was part of the Government that did this and then embarked on the closure of 66 A&E and maternity units across the land and led a campaign of austerity which has seen the NHS lurch into crisis every single winter, putting the lives of the young and elderly at risk.
Labour is the party of the NHS and the Conservatives are the Party of privatised medical services. We created the NHS after the Second World War in order to build a better society that is fair for all. The Conservatives opposed it.
In Hemel Hempstead and Dacorum the Conservatives know the price of everything and understand the value of nothing.
That’s why on Saturday July 7th Hemel Hempstead Labour Party will be in Marlowes asking shoppers to sign a giant birthday card to say thank you to our wonderful NHS staff.
The best birthday present that our NHS could have would be a General Election and the chance to sweep this Conservative government away.
