Well, we didn’t win the Hemel Hempstead seat but we gave it one heck of a go and secured the most votes for the Labour Party in the constituency since we won in 2001.
What a performance it was, with the Tory majority cut by A THIRD since the 2015 General Election.
I want to thank all of you who voted for me and all who worked on the campaign, from those who put up posters in their windows and boards in their gardens to those who pounded the streets to deliver leaflets and canvass on the doorsteps.
We polled a fantastic 19,290 votes, with our share of the total vote going up 13.1%. We may not have won but we certainly sent Mike Penning back to Westminster with plenty to think about.
He should know this time that he can’t take this constituency for granted and what was clear in the campaign was that he had nothing to say on cuts to school funding, funding of the NHS and his lie that Labour closed the hospital was exposed. Rest assured, we will be holding him to account and demanding more of his attention for Hemel and delivery on the things that need delivering.
I was very proud to be your Parliamentary candidate but behind me was a great team of party workers, campaigners and canvassers.
Your massive efforts made a huge difference and gave us real hope for the future. And that future may be sooner that we might think...
Theresa May seems determined to struggle on in a hung parliament with the help of the questionable support of the Democratic Unionist Party. But even her own party are questioning whether it can last.
And so we fight on here in Hemel, preparing ourselves for another General Election that she may well be forced to call with her position so weak and wobbly – certainly a long way from the “strong and stable” she kept telling us she represented.
Over the next few weeks we will continue to canvass and leaflet the constituency to remind voters that Hemel and its surrounding villages have a choice about the kind of community we want to be.
If you're not already on our volunteers list, please let us know if you'd like to help. And if you can help by making a small regular donation which will go directly to our local campaign, as we also build for the borough elections in 2019, you can set up a standing order.
Send us an e mail if you would like to donate.
All help is much appreciated as it was this time around. So thank you all once again for all your wonderful effort and I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail once more.
