Live from Brighton - opening session

IAIN McNicol - general secretary of the Labour Party - thanked everyone who fought a "brilliant election campaign" back in June.

That means YOU.

McNicol, speaking at the close of the first day's main session at the Labour Party 2017 Conference in Brighton, announced that we're now the largest political party in Europe with 570,000 members.

And he told the delegates gathered at the Brighton Conference Centre to keep campaigning back in their constituencies in a bid to get Labour BACK into power at the next general election - whenever that may be - and help create a lasting legacy as did the Governments of 1945, 1964 and 1997.

He said: "I want to thank everyone who fought a brilliant campaign. At the last election we left the Tory manifesto shredded. They were left with nothing to say.

"Next year are local elections with millions going to the polls. We need to reach into the Tory heartlands in preparation for the next government. The Tories may be in government now but they have no mandate.

"They think they are born to rule. Who is in to stop them? We are."

Party chair Ian Lavery added: "We nearly did it and we must continue to campaign so at the next election we are in pole position to grab those keys (to Downing Street). This is political reality. We were nearly there. We have to explain to people that it doesn't have to be like this, there are alternatives.

"A huge thank you to everyone who knocked on doors and handed out leaflets, all who came together as one team. Everyone deserves to give themselves a pat on the back.

"We made politics exciting again. The Tories are clinging on by their fingertips, The goverment is now propped up by bunging the DUP in excess of £1 billion from that magic money tree.

"The Labour Party are a government in waiting, to benefit of the lives of the many not the few. Teresa,Rees-Mogg, Bojo, bring it on"
